CULTURAL COMMENTARY for February 5, 2012
One of my favorite things to do is simply to just breathe, and think about things for a while. The weather has been good for that lately; kinda soft and cool, washing lots of the pollutants out of the air. So… I’ve been thinking…
What would happen IF… [a]we wanted excellence from ourselves, in all we do [b]we wanted the same of our children [c]we demanded it in our government? Could we have a different environment in which to live? A different church… a different set of values for families, and decisions?
What IF… we decided to do the Great Commission.. no ifs, ands or buts? What IF we intentionally made disciples, one-on-one, or one-on-fifty? (The only perfect plan is God’s..ours fall short and must be amended, from time to time, to line up with God’s.)
What IF.. preachers preached and deacons deac’ed, and teachers taught, and all Christians Christ-ed.. tried to show the world what it is to be a believer in Jesus the Christ?
I can get into lots of trouble thinking, and then writing down my thoughts. Ever do that? Writing a spiritual journal of what happens today or this week.. how God has blessed or what God is doing, can be a blessing. You can actually look back and see how much progress you are making.. and what mistakes too. Significant events get a second or third look. Does it take time? Sure. Is it worth it? Yes, to some, no to others. You just might want to find out, though.
In this last month, we are plagued with primary elections results, debates, and media-speak about what it all means. In the middle of this are court challenges, changes in morality, governmental edicts about faith organizations, new stories that show the worst of humanity. How do we cope?
My thinking leads me to I John 1:9.I believe we ought to carry it with us in our heart, and run like the devil was chasing us (because he is) and head for the Throne of Grace.
God can only forgive us, if we will bring Him our sin, failure and problems. He is only justified if that is what we do. He can’t just issue a blanket of forgiveness every time He sees the need. WE must approach God on a personal basis. Then, perhaps all the “What if’s” will go away. Whaddayathink?
