There are sure some “doom and gloom” sayers out there. Several new books have come out, concerning the new “Economic Apocalypse”. Seems like everything these days has to be apocalyptic, bail out, a tsunami of epic proportions, or some other dynamic wording, which gets people’s hackles up. Anyway, more and more folks are saying we are looking down the throat of another world-wide economic disaster. With global corporations, and countries depending on just a few of them for infrastructure, grants, taxes and production of necessities, that’s not too far fetched, in some places.
I was, however, struck by one book I read excerpts from, called “The Hole in the Gospel”. My first thought was “WHOA.. ain’t no holes in my gospel.” The gospel of Christ is inclusive, leaves out no one, is shown to be the agent of forgiveness for all sins, except that final rejection of God the Holy Spirit. As I read further, I sort of got the point. It said, “half the people on the planet, can’t find jobs with enough income to feed their families”. I understood that in Africa, South America, Mexico, and some undeveloped parts of the world, but Europe, Asia (which seems to get more and more American jobs), and certainly in the USA, I didn’t really snap on it. (And yes, I know unemployment is 9% +, and have other thoughts about that.) Yes, I know there are people who go to bed hungry everywhere, and more children than I would believe, but come on! Yet, statistically, what is being said is true.
Compassion is part of the gospel. Actually, the Heart of the Gospel. God gave because we could not, and can not achieve salvation by ourselves, so His compassion is at the heart of what God has done and is doing. Where’s ours? I’m thankful that this year, our opportunity has grown to share in this holiday season. We’ll be sharing not just with our church family, but others outside our walls. We have been all year, and people get hungry at times other than Thanksgiving and Christmas. THANK YOU for being in ministry enough to realize that! AND then doing something about it. I’m thankful for Bill & Darlene Wilson, managing that ministry, and keeping it before our hearts and consciences, and for each member who contributes in food or in cash. There is no compassion hole in the gospel at Converse FBC, thank you, Jesus. We need to extend our witness at every opportunity, holiday or not, telling people about Jesus in every way we can, living the life, loving the “appearing of the Lord”. We begin……………….. Whaddayathink?.. PS. Remember our Camargo Commitment. More later about that.
