Did you get enough turkey, dressing, ham, cranberry sauce, pie, and all the other foods we associate with Thanksgiving? Watch any football? Visit with family and talk to friends on the phone or go for a visit? If you didn’t, and you could have… it’s your fault. If you couldn’t, for some reason or other… I wish you could have done so. All those things are what we traditionally associate with the Thanksgiving holiday. And no, the Pilgrims did not watch football or do some of the other “Thanksgiving” things.
BUT… (I hear you saying to yourself, “Oh, Oh, now it’s coming!“) were we thankful in what we did do? Our sign just went up for the 27th. It says… “When you count your blessings, do you thank the God who gave them to you?” ( I could tell you the circumstances of the life of the person who suggested it, but you’d think I was bragging on them.) Most people are thankful to anything, or anyone, other than the God of Scripture. They believe fortune smiled on them, or they were just lucky this year, or they worked really hard and got what they deserved because of that. Actually, we should rather lift up the Lord for providing for our needs, and even for blessing us beyond just our needful things, and say Thank You, Father… Thank You Lord Jesus.. Thank You, God the Holy Spirit.
Thankful is an attitude… Thankful is a staunchly held spiritual keynote… Thankful is responding gracefully to what the Lord is doing. Sooooo…. a keynote attitude, where we respond to God with grace. Ahhh… did you do that this last week, respond to God I mean? Surely, if people will listen to politicians and respond (you would not believe how much cash people will fork over for dinner with a politician, and then write campaign checks on top of that!), or see a commercial and respond with VISA/MasterCard/$$$/check… they could respond to the Lord of the Multi-verse, and acknowledge His Glory, His salvation, His provision, and His blessings, and say “Thank You Lord”. I’m gonna preach on this on the 27th. Hope to see you then. Whaddayathink?
